Evidence supporting the use of: Tangerine
For the body system: Lungs
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Tangerine (Citrus reticulata) has a longstanding place in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where both its peel (commonly referred to as "chen pi") and fruit are used. In TCM, tangerine peel is believed to regulate qi (vital energy), reduce phlegm, and support Lung and Spleen function—especially in cases of cough, chest congestion, or excess mucus. The concept of supporting the "Lungs" in TCM is broader than the Western physiological perspective and includes functions such as dispersing and descending qi, as well as moistening and clearing phlegm.
While tangerine peel is widely used for respiratory complaints and thought to harmonize the middle burner (digestive system), direct scientific validation for tangerine or its peel specifically benefiting the lungs is limited. Some preclinical studies indicate citrus peels contain flavonoids and essential oils with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically benefit respiratory health, but there are no robust clinical trials directly linking tangerine consumption to improved lung function. Thus, the use of tangerine for lung health is primarily justified by traditional, rather than scientific, evidence.
