Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is known as "Lingzhi." In TCM, reishi is commonly regarded as a tonic for the lungs and is traditionally used to support respiratory health, manage coughs, and ease symptoms associated with asthma and bronchitis. The mushroom is thought to "nourish lung Qi" and promote overall vitality. Historical texts, such as the Shennong Bencao Jing, describe reishi as beneficial for chronic respiratory issues and as an adaptogen that helps the body resist stressors.
From a scientific perspective, there is limited but growing preclinical evidence suggesting that certain compounds in reishi, such as triterpenoids and polysaccharides, may have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects that could benefit the lungs. Some animal studies and in vitro experiments have noted reductions in airway inflammation and improved immune function. However, robust clinical trials in humans focusing specifically on lung health are lacking, and there is not enough scientific validation to firmly support its use for respiratory conditions. As such, the primary support for reishi's use in lung health comes from its traditional use rather than well-established clinical evidence.
