Bombax, particularly the species Bombax ceiba (commonly known as silk cotton tree), is traditionally used in various systems of medicine, especially in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. Historical texts and ethnobotanical records indicate that Bombax is used to alleviate symptoms related to respiratory ailments, such as coughs and bronchitis, suggesting a supportive role for the lungs. The bark, flowers, and roots are often prepared in decoctions or powders for their purported expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the contemporary scientific validation for these uses is limited. Most of the available evidence stems from traditional knowledge and a few preliminary pharmacological studies, which indicate that Bombax extracts may possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, but direct clinical evidence for lung support or respiratory benefit in humans is lacking. Thus, while its use for respiratory support is rooted in tradition, it is not strongly backed by modern scientific research. Further rigorous studies are needed to substantiate its efficacy and safety for lung health.
