Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla or Chamaemelum nobile) is traditionally used as a remedy for a variety of throat and respiratory ailments, including laryngitis. Historical and ethnobotanical records indicate that chamomile has been employed in folk medicine for its soothing, anti-inflammatory, and mild antimicrobial properties. Chamomile preparations—such as teas, gargles, or steam inhalations—are commonly used to alleviate sore throat, hoarseness, and irritation associated with laryngitis.

The rationale for its use centers on its anti-inflammatory constituents, such as chamazulene, apigenin, and bisabolol, which may help reduce swelling and irritation of the larynx. Some small studies and in vitro research show that chamomile possesses anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, which could theoretically benefit laryngitis, although these studies are not specific to laryngitis and mostly focus on general inflammation or oral mucositis.

Despite its widespread traditional use, there is limited scientific evidence directly supporting chamomile as an effective treatment for laryngitis. Most recommendations are based on its general soothing effects and anecdotal experiences rather than robust clinical trials. Therefore, while chamomile is commonly used in traditional practices for laryngitis, the strength of evidence remains modest.
