Green tea (Camellia sinensis) has been traditionally consumed for general digestive health, but its use specifically for supporting the large intestine or colon is primarily grounded in emerging scientific research rather than longstanding traditional practice. Green tea is rich in polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which exhibit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Several studies suggest that these properties may be beneficial to colon health. For instance, experimental models have shown that green tea polyphenols can modulate gut microbiota composition and suppress pro-inflammatory pathways linked to colon inflammation and disorders such as colitis. Some human observational studies also associate green tea consumption with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer. However, clinical trials directly demonstrating green tea's efficacy in supporting normal colon function or treating colon-specific disorders are limited and results are mixed. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence for the use of green tea to support large intestine health—mainly through anti-inflammatory and microbiota-modulating effects—the overall evidence is moderate and not yet definitive.
