Multiple scientific studies support its use for improving bowel regularity and alleviating symptoms of constipation. Flaxseed is rich in both soluble and insoluble fiber. Insoluble fiber adds bulk to the stool and accelerates intestinal transit, which helps prevent constipation, a common issue affecting the colon. A number of clinical trials have demonstrated that flaxseed supplementation increases stool frequency and improves stool consistency in constipated patients. For example, a 2015 randomized controlled trial in Nutrition Journal found that daily flaxseed intake significantly eased constipation and promoted regular bowel movements in adults.
Additionally, flaxseed's mucilage (gel-forming fiber) can soothe the lining of the colon, possibly reducing irritation in conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
