Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, primarily for its soothing and demulcent properties. Historically, marshmallow root and leaf extracts have been used to treat various mucous membrane irritations, including sore throats, coughs, and minor skin inflammations. Its use for "itching ears" is largely based on its demulcent action, which is believed to soothe irritated tissues and potentially reduce itching when applied topically or used in ear drops. However, there is little to no scientific research directly evaluating marshmallow specifically for itching ears. Most evidence is extrapolated from its general anti-inflammatory and soothing effects observed in other mucosal tissues. The demulcent properties are attributed to the high mucilage content, which forms a protective layer, possibly offering relief from irritation. Despite its traditional use, clinical studies supporting marshmallow's efficacy for ear itching are lacking. As such, while the herb is sometimes included in traditional remedies for minor ear discomfort, robust scientific validation is absent, and the practice relies mainly on anecdotal and historical precedent rather than rigorous evidence.
