Zinc has been used both traditionally and in modern medicine to support the treatment of itching (pruritus), particularly in dermatological conditions. Scientific evidence supporting the use of zinc for itching is modest but present, primarily involving topical formulations such as zinc oxide and zinc pyrithione. Zinc oxide is widely used in creams and ointments for conditions like diaper rash, eczema, and minor skin irritations, where it acts as a skin protectant and has mild anti-inflammatory properties. Zinc pyrithione is used in medicated shampoos for dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis, where it can reduce itching by addressing underlying fungal or microbial components.

Clinical trials and systematic reviews suggest that topical zinc preparations can improve symptoms of itching in certain conditions, such as atopic dermatitis, due to its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and barrier-repairing effects. However, the evidence base is not robust, with relatively few high-quality randomized controlled trials directly assessing zinc’s antipruritic effects. Oral zinc supplementation has limited evidence for reducing itching, except in cases of severe zinc deficiency, which itself can cause pruritus.

Overall, zinc’s use for treating itching is scientifically plausible and supported by some clinical experience, but the evidence is not strong or comprehensive across all causes of itch. It is best applied in specific dermatological contexts rather than as a general antipruritic agent.
