Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chamomile (Matricaria recutita or Chamaemelum nobile) has a long history in traditional medicine, especially for its calming and anti-inflammatory properties. Regarding itching (pruritus), there is some scientific evidence supporting its use, particularly for mild skin irritation or itching due to conditions like eczema, atopic dermatitis, or minor rashes.

Preclinical studies suggest that chamomile extracts possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and mild antihistaminic effects, likely due to compounds such as apigenin, chamazulene, and bisabolol. These compounds can modulate inflammatory pathways and reduce skin irritation. Several small clinical studies and case reports have examined topical chamomile preparations (creams, ointments, or compresses) for their ability to soothe itching and inflammation. For example, a randomized controlled trial comparing chamomile cream to hydrocortisone showed that chamomile may be similarly effective in reducing symptoms of eczema, including itching, though the study size was limited and results have not been consistently replicated.

Overall, while there is some scientific validation—mainly for topical use—the evidence is limited in both quantity and quality. Chamomile is generally considered safe when used on the skin, with rare reports of contact allergy. More robust, large-scale clinical trials are needed to firmly establish its efficacy for treating itching. Thus, it is rated as having low-to-moderate scientific evidence for this use.
