Zinc has recently garnered interest in the context of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), but its use is not based on traditional medical practices. Instead, emerging scientific research has begun to explore its potential role. Zinc is an essential trace element involved in immune function, antioxidant defense, and maintenance of gut mucosal integrity. Some studies have found that patients with IBS, especially those with diarrhea-predominant IBS (IBS-D), may have lower serum zinc levels compared to healthy controls. This has led to the hypothesis that zinc supplementation could support gut barrier function and modulate inflammation, potentially alleviating IBS symptoms.
However, the quality and quantity of evidence are limited. A few small clinical trials and observational studies have examined zinc supplementation in IBS patients. Some report improvements in gastrointestinal symptoms, while others show no significant benefit. For example, a 2021 randomized controlled trial found that zinc supplementation improved quality of life and reduced symptom severity in IBS patients, but the sample size was small and the study duration was short. No major clinical guidelines currently recommend zinc for IBS, and larger, high-quality studies are needed to confirm these findings.
