Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Propolis, a resinous substance collected by bees from plant buds and exudates, has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in folk remedies across various cultures. Its use to support the intestinal system is primarily based on its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties, which have been recognized in traditional herbal practices. Propolis has been used orally to soothe gastrointestinal discomfort, treat ulcers, and combat infections, although most of this evidence is anecdotal or derived from traditional texts rather than rigorous scientific research.

There are some preclinical (animal and in vitro) studies suggesting that propolis extracts may help protect the gastrointestinal lining, reduce inflammation, and inhibit the growth of certain pathogens associated with intestinal disorders. However, robust clinical trials in humans are limited, and the results are not universally conclusive. Therefore, while traditional use for intestinal support is well-documented, and there is some experimental support, the overall scientific evidence remains modest. The rating of 2 reflects the predominance of traditional claims with only preliminary scientific backing rather than strong clinical validation.
