Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) has some scientific basis for its use in supporting fertility, though the evidence is limited and not overwhelmingly strong. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant, which means it helps to neutralize free radicals that can damage cells, including reproductive cells such as sperm and eggs. Oxidative stress is believed to be a contributing factor in infertility for both men and women. Some studies have found that vitamin C supplementation can improve sperm quality in men, including motility, count, and morphology, potentially enhancing male fertility. For example, a small study published in "Fertility and Sterility" (1992) showed that vitamin C supplementation improved sperm parameters in infertile men.

For women, the evidence is less clear. Vitamin C may support reproductive health by supporting hormone balance and improving endometrial health, but large clinical trials demonstrating a direct improvement in female infertility are lacking. The use of vitamin C for infertility is therefore somewhat justified by its biological plausibility and small-scale studies, particularly for male infertility. However, it is not considered a primary or standalone treatment for infertility, and its effects are generally modest. More robust, high-quality research is needed to confirm these potential benefits.
