Eucalyptus, particularly its essential oil (Eucalyptus globulus), has been traditionally used for respiratory ailments and infections. Scientific research has validated some of these uses, especially due to its major component, 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), which exhibits antimicrobial properties. In vitro studies have shown that eucalyptus oil can inhibit the growth of various bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Some studies suggest it may disrupt bacterial cell membranes or interfere with biofilm formation, which are mechanisms relevant to combating bacterial infections.
However, most of the evidence comes from laboratory and animal studies, not large-scale clinical trials in humans. The concentrations required for antibacterial efficacy in vitro may not always be achievable or safe in the human body, especially since eucalyptus oil can be toxic in high doses. Clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of eucalyptus preparations in treating bacterial infections (such as respiratory tract infections) are limited and often focus on symptom relief rather than direct antibacterial effects.
While eucalyptus oil is included in some over-the-counter products for its purported antimicrobial benefits, the strength of evidence supporting its use as a primary treatment for bacterial infections in humans is modest. It may provide adjunctive benefits, especially in respiratory tract infections, but should not replace standard antibacterial therapies. Overall, while there is scientific rationale and preliminary evidence, more robust clinical research is needed to fully validate eucalyptus as a treatment for bacterial infections.
