Zinc has some scientific basis for use in the management of impetigo, although the evidence is limited and not robust enough to recommend it as a primary therapy. Impetigo is a superficial bacterial skin infection, most commonly caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. Standard treatments involve topical or oral antibiotics. However, zinc compounds, particularly zinc oxide and zinc sulfate, have been explored as adjunctive therapies due to their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.

A handful of small clinical trials and laboratory studies have evaluated the antibacterial effect of topical zinc preparations against the pathogens responsible for impetigo. For instance, a double-blind study published in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment (2001) compared zinc oxide ointment to mupirocin and found zinc to be less effective but still somewhat beneficial in reducing lesion size and bacterial load. The proposed mechanisms include zinc's ability to inhibit bacterial growth and modulate local immune responses. Zinc is also a common ingredient in barrier creams and ointments, which may protect damaged skin and prevent secondary infection.

Despite these properties, the overall quality and quantity of clinical evidence is low, and zinc is not included in major treatment guidelines for impetigo. It may be considered when conventional antibiotics are not available, or as a supportive measure, but should not replace proven therapies. Thus, zinc's use in impetigo is scientifically plausible but only weakly supported by clinical data.
