Schizonepeta (Schizonepeta tenuifolia), also known as Jing Jie, is a traditional herb widely used in Chinese medicine. Its primary traditional uses are to disperse wind, release the exterior, and alleviate symptoms like fever, sore throat, and skin eruptions. In the context of herpes, especially herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections which manifest as sores or blisters on the skin or mucous membranes, Schizonepeta is sometimes included in traditional herbal formulas. The rationale is based on its historical use for "wind-heat" conditions and eruptive skin diseases in Chinese medical theory, which are sometimes believed to correspond to viral infections such as herpes.

There is, however, very limited scientific research specifically linking Schizonepeta to direct antiviral activity against HSV or other herpes viruses. Some laboratory studies suggest Schizonepeta may possess general anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, which could theoretically aid in the symptomatic management of herpes outbreaks. Nevertheless, these studies are preliminary and do not provide robust clinical evidence. No high-quality human clinical trials have demonstrated efficacy of Schizonepeta for herpes.

In summary, the use of Schizonepeta for herpes is primarily rooted in traditional Chinese medicine practices and theory, with only very weak or indirect scientific support. Its inclusion in formulas for herpes reflects a traditional understanding of disease rather than evidence-based medicine.
