Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Aloe macroclada, a plant native to Madagascar, is traditionally used in Malagasy folk medicine for a variety of ailments, including skin conditions and infections. There are ethnobotanical reports indicating its use in the treatment of herpes and other viral infections by local communities. The rationale for its use is generally based on its perceived antiviral and wound-healing properties, similar to those attributed to other Aloe species such as Aloe vera. However, there is a significant lack of scientific studies specifically investigating the antiviral effects of Aloe macroclada against herpes simplex virus (HSV) or related pathogens. Most available documentation consists of traditional knowledge and anecdotal reports rather than controlled clinical or laboratory data. As such, while traditional use is documented, the evidence base supporting its efficacy for herpes is weak and not substantiated by rigorous scientific research.
