Tangerine (Citrus reticulata) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other herbal systems primarily for its effects on digestion, regulation of qi (vital energy), and relief of cough or phlegm. In the context of "Heart weakness," the use of tangerine peel (Chen Pi) is more commonly associated with supporting the Spleen and Lung functions rather than the Heart directly. However, in TCM, organ systems are interrelated, and by improving qi flow and digestion, tangerine peel is thought to provide indirect support to the Heart, especially in cases where digestive weakness is believed to contribute to overall systemic or "Heart" weakness. There is limited direct historical precedent for using tangerine specifically to treat primary heart conditions such as heart failure or arrhythmia; the indications are more general and related to vitality and energy. Scientific studies on tangerine's cardiovascular effects are limited and mostly focus on its antioxidant content (like flavonoids), which may have some general benefit for cardiovascular health, but there is not enough clinical evidence to justify its use for "Heart weakness" as defined in Western medicine. Thus, the use of tangerine for this purpose is justified mainly by tradition rather than robust scientific validation.
