Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitex negundo, commonly known as the Chinese chaste tree or Nirgundi, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda, Unani, and traditional Chinese medicine, for the management of headache, including sinus-related headaches. In these traditions, the leaves, seeds, and roots are prepared as decoctions, pastes, or oils and applied locally or taken orally to reduce pain and inflammation associated with headaches. The use is based on the herb’s reputed anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and decongestant properties.

Some preclinical studies suggest that extracts of Vitex negundo possess anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antihistaminic effects, which could theoretically support its use for sinus headaches. However, there is a lack of robust clinical trials directly evaluating the efficacy of Vitex negundo for sinus or any type of headache in humans. Thus, the use for sinus headache is primarily justified by traditional knowledge and anecdotal reports rather than high-quality scientific evidence. Further research, especially clinical trials, would be necessary to establish its efficacy and safety for this indication.
