Evidence supporting the use of: Pluchea
For the health condition: Headache (sinus)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Pluchea, specifically Pluchea indica and Pluchea odorata, has a traditional history of use in various folk medicine systems, particularly in Southeast Asia, India, and parts of the Americas. In traditional practices, the leaves and other parts of the plant are often used as a remedy for headaches, including those associated with sinus congestion. The rationale behind its use stems from its reputed anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, as well as its application as a decongestant in ethnomedicine. For example, in Ayurvedic and Thai traditional medicine, decoctions or poultices made from Pluchea leaves are sometimes applied to the forehead or inhaled as steam to help alleviate headache symptoms believed to be caused by sinus issues.
Despite its traditional use, scientific validation for Pluchea’s efficacy specifically for sinus headaches is limited. Some laboratory studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities for extracts of Pluchea species, supporting the plausibility of its traditional use for pain and inflammation. However, there are no well-controlled clinical trials directly evaluating its effectiveness for sinus headaches in humans. As such, the evidence supporting Pluchea’s use for headache (sinus) is primarily traditional, with a modest rating due to the presence of supporting in vitro and animal data but a lack of robust clinical evidence.
