Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Houttuynia cordata (commonly called Houttuynia) has a history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, particularly in Chinese herbal medicine, for a variety of ailments including sinus-related conditions. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Houttuynia is believed to clear heat and resolve toxicity, and it is sometimes included in herbal formulas for respiratory infections, sinusitis, and associated headaches. The rationale for its use is primarily based on its purported anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immune-modulating properties as described in TCM texts.

However, scientific research specifically investigating Houttuynia's effectiveness for sinus headaches is limited. Some laboratory studies have demonstrated that Houttuynia extracts possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, which could theoretically be beneficial in conditions like sinusitis that can cause headache. Despite these findings, there is a lack of robust clinical trials directly supporting its efficacy for sinus headaches in humans. As such, its use for this purpose remains rooted in traditional practice rather than established scientific evidence, resulting in a moderate evidence rating based mostly on historical and ethnomedical use, rather than modern clinical validation.
