Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) has a history of traditional use in various folk medicine systems, including those of Native Americans and early settlers in North America. Its resin, sometimes called "storax," was historically used to treat a variety of ailments, including coughs, wounds, and sometimes headaches. The rationale for its use in treating headaches is largely anecdotal and based on its aromatic resins, which were sometimes inhaled or applied topically for symptomatic relief. However, these traditional uses are not supported by robust clinical evidence or detailed pharmacological studies specific to headache treatment. Most modern herbal and pharmacological references do not list sweetgum as a primary or secondary remedy for headaches. Additionally, the active compounds in sweetgum (such as cinnamic acid derivatives and terpenes) have not been directly linked to mechanisms that would relieve headaches in controlled studies. Therefore, while sweetgum's use for headaches is rooted in tradition, the evidence supporting its effectiveness is weak and mostly anecdotal.
