Snakeroot is a common name used for several unrelated plants, but in the context of headache treatment, it most often refers to Rauwolfia serpentina (Indian snakeroot) or Aristolochia serpentaria (Virginia snakeroot). The primary traditional use stems from Rauwolfia serpentina, which has a long history in Ayurvedic and other South Asian traditional medicine systems for a variety of ailments, including headaches and nervous disorders. Its roots contain alkaloids such as reserpine, which were later found to affect neurotransmitter levels and blood pressure.
