Evidence supporting the use of: Rhemannia
For the health condition: Headache (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Rehmannia (Rehmannia glutinosa) is a herb widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is known as "Shu Di Huang" (when prepared). In TCM, Rehmannia is not commonly used as a primary or direct remedy for headaches but is included in various formulas that address underlying patterns believed to cause headaches, such as yin deficiency or blood deficiency. The rationale is that by nourishing the yin or replenishing blood, the body’s overall balance is improved, which sometimes alleviates headache as a secondary effect. There is limited historical documentation specifically linking Rehmannia as a standalone remedy for headache; it is usually one of several herbs in multi-ingredient formulas.
From a scientific perspective, there is no direct evidence or clinical trial data supporting Rehmannia’s efficacy for general headache relief. Most scientific studies focus on its potential for kidney health, diabetes, or neuroprotection, rather than headache management. Thus, its use for headache is justified by tradition rather than by modern research, and even within tradition, it is not a primary treatment for this symptom. The evidence rating reflects the lack of direct clinical or pharmacological support for this use.
