Magnesium has scientific support for use in managing certain types of headaches, particularly migraines. Multiple studies and clinical guidelines suggest that magnesium supplementation can be beneficial, especially for individuals who have a deficiency of this mineral. Research indicates that magnesium plays a role in neurotransmitter release and vasodilation, both of which are relevant to headache pathophysiology. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown that oral magnesium can reduce the frequency and intensity of migraine attacks, with some evidence also supporting its use in acute management via intravenous administration. The American Headache Society and the American Academy of Neurology recognize magnesium as "probably effective" for migraine prevention. However, the evidence is stronger for migraines than for other types of headaches, such as tension-type headaches or cluster headaches, where the data remains limited or inconclusive. Magnesium is generally well-tolerated, but gastrointestinal side effects may occur.
