Cola nut (from the Cola species, especially Cola acuminata and Cola nitida) has been traditionally used in West African medicine to address several ailments, including headaches. The kola nut contains caffeine, theobromine, and other xanthine alkaloids known for their stimulant effects. Caffeine, in particular, is a well-known vasoconstrictor and is an active ingredient in some modern over-the-counter headache and migraine medications. Historically, kola nut has been chewed or brewed into beverages to relieve fatigue and headaches, with use documented among various West African populations. However, while the presence of caffeine provides a plausible mechanism for headache relief (mainly through vasoconstriction and increased alertness), there is little direct scientific research specifically validating the effectiveness of cola nut itself for treating headaches. Most references to its use are ethnobotanical or anthropological. The World Health Organization’s monographs and other phytotherapy texts acknowledge its traditional use for headache, but rigorous clinical studies are lacking. In summary, the use of cola nut for headache relief is primarily justified by traditional use and the known pharmacological effects of its caffeine content. Nevertheless, the absence of controlled clinical trials means the evidence supporting its efficacy for this specific condition remains limited.
