Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Centipeda (commonly referring to Centipeda minima, also known as "Eclipta" or "Indian Pennywort") has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Centipeda minima (Xiao Bai Ju) is used to "dispel wind" and "relieve pain," and is sometimes included in herbal formulas intended to treat symptoms such as headache, nasal congestion, and sinusitis. The rationale for its use in headache is based on its purported ability to clear the head and open nasal passages, which are considered relevant in TCM for headaches related to sinus issues or "wind-cold" invasion.
However, scientific studies directly evaluating the efficacy of Centipeda for headaches are lacking. Most available research focuses on its anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties, which could theoretically contribute to headache relief if headaches are secondary to sinus inflammation or allergic rhinitis. These mechanisms have been demonstrated in vitro and in animal models, but there is no robust clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness for headache in humans. Therefore, while traditional use is well-documented, scientific validation remains limited, and the evidence level is rated as 2, reflecting traditional endorsement with minimal supporting scientific data.
