Evidence supporting the use of: Aconite
For the health condition: Headache (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Aconite (also known as Aconitum or monkshood) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and homeopathy. In these traditions, aconite is sometimes used for the treatment of headaches and other pain-related conditions. In TCM, preparations of processed aconite root (usually carefully detoxified to reduce toxicity) are believed to dispel "wind" and alleviate pain. Homeopathic practices also utilize highly diluted aconite preparations for headaches, especially those that are sudden in onset and associated with anxiety or fear.
Despite its traditional use, there is little to no high-quality scientific evidence to support the efficacy of aconite in the treatment of general headaches. Clinical studies are lacking, and modern medical literature primarily highlights the risks associated with aconite, as it contains potent alkaloids (such as aconitine) that can be highly toxic or even fatal in significant doses. Because of these toxicity concerns, aconite is rarely, if ever, used in evidence-based Western medicine for headache. The evidence rating of 2 reflects its use in traditional systems, but the lack of robust clinical data limits confidence in its effectiveness for this purpose.
