Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin B12 is recognized as important for overall cell metabolism, including the health of hair follicles. Scientifically, B12 deficiency can lead to hair changes, including hair loss (telogen effluvium). This is because B12 plays a key role in DNA synthesis and red blood cell formation, both of which support healthy hair follicle function. Individuals with low B12 levels—such as those with pernicious anemia, strict vegans, or people with certain gastrointestinal disorders—may experience hair thinning or loss that can improve with B12 supplementation. However, for people with normal B12 status, there is little evidence that supplementation improves hair growth or quality. Most studies have focused on correcting deficiency rather than enhancing hair in otherwise healthy individuals. While B12 is frequently included in hair care products and supplements, the evidence supporting its use for non-deficiency-related hair concerns is weak. Thus, B12 supplementation is scientifically justified only for hair health in the context of a diagnosed deficiency, not as a general hair care enhancer. In summary, the scientific evidence for B12's use in hair care is moderate when deficiency is present (hence a rating of 2), but not for the general population without deficiency.
