Zinc is an essential trace mineral that plays a key role in various biological processes, including cell growth, DNA synthesis, and immune function. Its use for supporting hair health is supported by a moderate body of scientific evidence. Multiple studies have shown that zinc deficiency can lead to hair loss, particularly a condition known as telogen effluvium, which is characterized by diffuse thinning of hair. In some cases, zinc supplementation has been found to help restore hair growth in individuals with zinc deficiency. For example, a study published in the journal Annals of Dermatology (2013) found significantly lower serum zinc levels in patients with different forms of hair loss, and supplementation improved outcomes for those who were deficient.

However, the evidence is less robust for individuals who have normal zinc levels. In the absence of deficiency, additional zinc supplementation does not appear to meaningfully enhance hair growth or health. Routine supplementation is not widely recommended for hair loss unless a deficiency is confirmed. Over-supplementation can also lead to adverse effects, such as interfering with copper absorption and causing gastrointestinal symptoms. In summary, while zinc is scientifically validated as necessary for healthy hair and can be beneficial for those with deficiency, its general use for hair support in people with adequate levels is not strongly supported.
