Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is an essential water-soluble vitamin involved in DNA synthesis, red blood cell formation, and neurological function. Its use to support the hair/body system is based on the scientific observation that B12 deficiency can lead to hair changes, including premature graying and hair loss. However, there is limited evidence that B12 supplementation improves hair growth or health in individuals with normal B12 levels.

Several case reports and small studies have documented hair loss (telogen effluvium) and pigmentation changes in people with B12 deficiency, which often resolve with B12 replacement. These effects are likely due to B12's role in supporting rapidly dividing cells, such as those in hair follicles. Despite this, no robust clinical trials demonstrate that B12 supplementation benefits hair in the absence of deficiency.

Thus, while maintaining adequate B12 levels is important for overall health and may help prevent hair-related symptoms in those who are deficient (such as strict vegetarians, older adults, or those with absorption issues), there is insufficient scientific evidence to support using B12 for hair support in the general population. The overall evidence rating for B12's use in supporting the hair/body system, beyond treating deficiency, is modest.
