Vitamin C is scientifically validated as essential for gum (periodontal) health. Deficiency in vitamin C leads to scurvy, a disease characterized by bleeding, swollen gums and tooth loss, which demonstrates its critical role in maintaining gum integrity. Vitamin C is necessary for collagen synthesis, a structural protein vital for the connective tissue in the gums. Numerous studies have shown that individuals with low vitamin C intake are at greater risk for periodontal disease and gingival inflammation. A 2003 systematic review in the Journal of Periodontology found that vitamin C deficiency is strongly associated with an increased risk of periodontal disease. Supplementing vitamin C in deficient individuals results in improvement of gum health and reduction of bleeding. However, for individuals who are not deficient, additional supplementation has not been conclusively shown to further improve gum health. The evidence base is robust regarding prevention and treatment of deficiency-related gum problems, but less strong for benefits beyond correcting deficiency. Thus, the use of vitamin C to support the gum body system is well supported by scientific evidence, especially in the context of deficiency or increased need.
