Green tea (Camellia sinensis) has been studied for its potential protective effects in glaucoma, primarily due to its high content of polyphenols, especially catechins such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Laboratory and animal studies have shown that green tea catechins possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. In models of ocular hypertension and glaucoma in rats, green tea extracts and EGCG have demonstrated the ability to reduce retinal ganglion cell death and decrease oxidative stress in ocular tissues, both of which are significant contributors to glaucomatous optic neuropathy.

Some small human studies have investigated the systemic antioxidant effects of green tea in glaucoma patients, indicating that regular consumption may modestly increase antioxidant capacity in the aqueous humor and plasma, potentially providing some protection against glaucoma-related damage. However, there is currently no robust clinical evidence from large-scale randomized controlled trials demonstrating that green tea, or its extracts, directly prevent the progression of glaucoma or lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in humans. The use of green tea as an adjunct therapy is primarily based on preclinical data and its general health benefits rather than direct clinical efficacy in glaucoma management.

In summary, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence supporting the neuroprotective and antioxidant potential of green tea in glaucoma, the clinical evidence remains limited. Therefore, green tea should not be relied upon as a primary treatment for glaucoma but may be considered as a supplementary dietary measure pending further research.
