Evidence supporting the use of: Vitex negundo
For the health condition: Glands (swollen lymph)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Vitex negundo, commonly known as Chinese chaste tree or Nirgundi, has a long-standing history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani. In these systems, it is often used to alleviate swelling, pain, and inflammation, including conditions described as "swollen glands" or lymphadenopathy. The leaves, in particular, are applied as poultices or used in decoctions with the intent of reducing localized swelling and supporting the lymphatic system.
However, while there are some in vitro and animal studies supporting the anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of Vitex negundo, direct scientific research examining its efficacy specifically for swollen lymph glands or lymphadenitis is lacking. The majority of the evidence comes from ethnobotanical surveys and traditional texts that describe its use for “glandular swellings,” “inflammations,” or “scrofula.” Some phytochemical analyses have identified flavonoids, iridoids, and volatile oils as active constituents, which may contribute to its purported effects, but clinical trials in humans for this indication are absent.
In summary, the use of Vitex negundo for swollen glands is justified by a strong tradition of ethnomedical use, with some supporting pharmacological rationale, but lacks direct scientific validation in the context of lymphatic conditions.
