Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Umckalin is a coumarin compound found in the roots of Pelargonium sidoides, a plant traditionally used in South African herbal medicine. Historically, extracts of Pelargonium sidoides (commonly known as Umckaloabo) have been used to treat respiratory tract infections, which sometimes are associated with swollen lymph nodes (“glands”). The rationale for its use in this context is based on traditional practices and anecdotal reports rather than controlled scientific research. While some clinical studies have evaluated Pelargonium sidoides extracts for their efficacy in reducing the duration and severity of respiratory infections (such as acute bronchitis and sinusitis), these studies do not specifically address the treatment of swollen lymph nodes. There is currently no robust clinical evidence that Umckalin itself, or Pelargonium sidoides extracts more broadly, directly reduce lymph node swelling. Instead, any improvement is likely secondary to their possible effects on underlying infections. Thus, the use of Umckalin for swollen glands is supported by tradition and historical usage in herbal medicine, but lacks strong scientific validation for this specific indication. The evidence rating is a 2, reflecting some traditional use but little direct scientific support.
