Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Premna (often Premna serratifolia, also called “Agnimantha” in Ayurveda) is traditionally used in various Asian medicinal systems for conditions involving swollen glands or lymph nodes. In Ayurveda, Premna is a key ingredient in the classical herbal formula “Dashamoola,” which is prescribed for its anti-inflammatory and “detoxifying” properties, and is sometimes recommended for glandular swellings or lymphadenitis. Ethnomedical records from India and Southeast Asia also mention its use as a remedy for various inflammatory conditions, including those involving lymphatic congestion.

However, scientific validation supporting these uses is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of Premna extracts, but these studies rarely address swollen lymph nodes specifically, and clinical data in humans are lacking. Thus, while the traditional rationale for using Premna for swollen glands is well documented in classical and folk medicine texts, robust modern scientific evidence is minimal, and therapeutic efficacy for this specific indication has not been confirmed in clinical trials.
