Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Polygonatum species, commonly known as Solomon’s Seal, have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and various folk medicines. In TCM, Polygonatum (most commonly Polygonatum sibiricum and Polygonatum odoratum) is primarily used to "nourish yin," "moisten dryness," and "tonify the lungs and kidneys." While some herbal texts mention its use for conditions involving swelling or inflammation, including swelling that may be interpreted as glandular or lymphatic in nature, the references are indirect. There is no clear, consistent, or widespread use of Polygonatum specifically for swollen lymph glands (lymphadenopathy) in traditional medical literature, but rather as part of broader anti-inflammatory or immune-supportive formulas.

Scientifically, there is very limited evidence regarding the use of Polygonatum for swollen lymph nodes. A few in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of certain constituents (such as polysaccharides), but these do not specifically address lymphatic conditions or lymphadenopathy. There are no clinical trials or robust studies demonstrating its effectiveness for this particular indication.

Thus, while traditional use exists for general inflammatory and immune-related conditions, direct support for swollen glands is limited and evidence strength is low.
