Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

The Matapalo tree (commonly referring to various species of strangler fig, especially Ficus spp.) is traditionally used in several regions of Central and South America for a variety of medicinal purposes. Among these, one reported folk use is the application of Matapalo bark, leaves, or latex in poultices or decoctions to treat "swollen glands" or lymphadenopathy. This practice appears in ethnobotanical surveys among indigenous groups and rural healers, who associate the plant with anti-inflammatory or "drawing out" properties. However, there is little in the way of controlled scientific studies examining the efficacy or mechanism of Matapalo preparations specifically for swollen lymph glands. Some preliminary phytochemical analyses have identified the presence of flavonoids, tannins, and other compounds with general anti-inflammatory potential in Ficus species, but these findings do not directly validate traditional claims regarding lymphatic swelling. In summary, while the use of Matapalo for swollen glands is rooted in traditional medicine, scientific validation is lacking, and the evidence supporting its effectiveness is weak and largely anecdotal.
