Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Indian Coraltree (Erythrina variegata) has a well-documented history of use in traditional medicine systems in India and Southeast Asia. In Ayurveda and various folk traditions, different parts of the plant—including bark, leaves, and flowers—are used for their purported anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Specifically, the bark has been applied in the form of pastes or decoctions for treating swellings, glandular enlargements (commonly interpreted as swollen lymph nodes), and similar conditions. The rationale is primarily based on the plant’s perceived ability to "reduce heat" or "clear toxins" from the body, aligning with the humoral theories of traditional medicine. Scientific evidence validating these uses is limited. A few pharmacological studies have identified anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in extracts of Indian Coraltree, attributed to various flavonoids and alkaloids present in the plant. However, there are no clinical trials or robust experimental studies directly examining its efficacy in treating lymphadenopathy or specifically swollen lymph glands in humans. Thus, while the traditional use is established, scientific validation is currently lacking, and the evidence supporting its use for glandular swelling remains moderate at best, based more on historical precedent than on modern research.
