Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

European Elder (Sambucus nigra) has a long history of traditional use in European herbal medicine, particularly for supporting the immune system and addressing symptoms of colds, flu, and fever. Elderflower and elderberry preparations were often used to promote sweating and "cleanse the blood," and they were sometimes recommended by traditional herbalists to help with "swollen glands" or lymphatic congestion, especially during upper respiratory infections. However, these uses are based on empirical tradition rather than scientific validation. There is no robust clinical evidence directly supporting the use of European Elder for treating swollen lymph glands (lymphadenopathy). Most modern research focuses on its antiviral properties, especially against influenza viruses, and its potential to reduce the duration and severity of cold symptoms. No well-controlled human studies have specifically evaluated its effects on lymphatic swelling or lymph node health. The traditional rationale was likely due to elder's diaphoretic (sweat-inducing) and mild anti-inflammatory properties, which were thought to "move" fluids and support recovery. In summary, while Elder is traditionally used for symptoms sometimes associated with lymphatic issues, there is minimal direct scientific evidence for its efficacy in treating swollen lymph glands.
