Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Dipsacus (commonly known as teasel) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Chinese and European traditions. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the root of Dipsacus asper (xu duan) is used to "tonify the liver and kidneys," "strengthen bones and sinews," and "promote the healing of fractures and wounds." While not specifically targeted at "swollen glands" (lymphadenopathy), Dipsacus has sometimes been included in formulas aimed at reducing inflammation or swelling in the context of trauma or musculoskeletal injuries.

In Western herbal traditions, teasel has similarly been used for joint and bone complaints, with some anecdotal use for "glandular swellings" or as a general tonic. However, clear documentation of its use specifically for swollen lymph glands is limited and largely anecdotal.

There is minimal scientific research directly supporting the use of Dipsacus for swollen lymph glands. Most modern studies focus on its possible anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, or bone-healing properties, and not on lymphatic or glandular conditions. Therefore, the use of Dipsacus for swollen glands is justified primarily by tradition, with weak evidence and little to no scientific validation.
