Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Commiphora species, particularly Commiphora mukul (guggul) and Commiphora myrrha (myrrh), have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani. These resins have been used for a variety of ailments, including inflammation, infections, and swelling. In traditional texts, preparations of Commiphora are sometimes recommended for conditions characterized by "swelling of the glands," which could correspond to lymphadenopathy or swollen lymph nodes. The rationale in these systems is often based on the perceived anti-inflammatory and "detoxifying" properties of the resins.

However, there is very limited direct scientific evidence supporting the use of Commiphora species for swollen lymph nodes specifically. Some laboratory and animal studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of Commiphora extracts, but these studies are not specific to lymphatic swelling, and clinical trials in humans for this indication are lacking. The use for "swollen glands" therefore remains primarily rooted in traditional practice rather than supported by rigorous clinical evidence.

In summary, while Commiphora has a long-standing reputation in traditional medicine for addressing various forms of swelling, including glandular swellings, the scientific evidence for its effectiveness in treating swollen lymph nodes is minimal to nonexistent.
