Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Baliospermum montanum is traditionally used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicinal systems in India for a variety of ailments, including conditions associated with swollen glands or lymphadenopathy. The root and other parts of the plant have been described as possessing anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties. In classical Ayurvedic texts, Baliospermum (commonly called 'Danti') is mentioned as a purgative and is sometimes used in formulations intended to address "glandular swellings" or "granthi." The rationale for its use is largely based on the belief that its purgative effect helps eliminate toxins that may contribute to swelling of lymph nodes or glands.

However, scientific research specifically validating its efficacy for swollen lymph glands is limited. While some pharmacological studies indicate anti-inflammatory effects and potential immunomodulatory activity of extracts from Baliospermum montanum, these are mostly preclinical (animal or in vitro) studies and do not specifically focus on lymphatic conditions. There are few, if any, rigorous human clinical trials evaluating its effect on swollen lymph nodes. Therefore, its use for swollen glands is primarily justified by tradition and historic usage rather than robust scientific evidence.
