Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Ajuga (commonly known as bugleweed) has a history of traditional use in herbal medicine, particularly in European and North American folk practices. It has been used for a variety of ailments, including those related to the lymphatic system such as swollen glands. Historical texts and herbalists often recommended Ajuga for its purported ability to "cool" and "move" lymph, and for its mild astringent and anti-inflammatory effects. However, the rationale for its use in treating swollen lymph glands is largely based on empirical tradition rather than scientific validation. There is limited, if any, clinical research specifically evaluating Ajuga’s effectiveness for swollen lymph nodes or lymphatic disorders. Most modern herbal references mention Ajuga’s use for mild thyroid disorders, bleeding, or as a mild sedative, rather than for lymphatic swelling. The evidence supporting its use for swollen glands is therefore weak and primarily anecdotal, with no robust studies to confirm efficacy. More research would be needed to substantiate these traditional claims.
