Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Vitamin C has a scientifically validated role in supporting gum health and potentially treating gingivitis, largely due to its critical function in collagen synthesis and immune response. Gingivitis is an inflammatory condition of the gums, often related to bacterial plaque accumulation. Vitamin C deficiency is known to result in scurvy, which is characterized by bleeding, swollen gums, and periodontal disease. Several observational studies have shown that individuals with lower dietary vitamin C intake are at increased risk of periodontal disease, including gingivitis. Clinical trials have indicated that supplementation with vitamin C in deficient individuals can improve gingival health, reduce bleeding, and enhance wound healing in gum tissues. However, in individuals with adequate vitamin C status, supplementation does not appear to dramatically improve gingivitis outcomes beyond standard dental treatments such as improved oral hygiene and professional cleaning. While vitamin C is sometimes used adjunctively in dental practice for patients with poor diets or increased risk of deficiency, it is not a primary therapeutic agent for gingivitis when nutritional status is adequate. Overall, the evidence supports the importance of vitamin C for prevention and adjunctive support, particularly in those at risk of deficiency, rather than as a sole treatment for gingivitis.
