Evidence supporting the use of: Thaumatococcus daniellii
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Thaumatococcus daniellii (commonly known as the miracle berry plant) has traditional uses in various parts of West and Central Africa, notably for its sweetening protein thaumatin. Ethnobotanical surveys indicate the plant’s leaves and extracts have been used in folk medicine for a variety of ailments, including as mouthwash or for treating oral conditions such as gingivitis. The rationale for its use in gingivitis is primarily based on traditional knowledge, where decoctions or chewed leaves are believed to soothe inflamed gums and maintain oral hygiene.
Scientific validation for these uses is limited. While some studies have documented the plant’s antimicrobial properties, particularly against certain oral pathogens, direct clinical trials or in vitro studies specifically examining its efficacy in gingivitis treatment are scarce. There are a few reports suggesting some antibacterial activity of extracts from the plant, but these are not robust or specific enough to establish a firm scientific basis for its use in gingivitis. Therefore, while Thaumatococcus daniellii is used traditionally for this purpose, the current evidence supporting its effectiveness is weak and primarily anecdotal.
In summary, the use of Thaumatococcus daniellii for gingivitis is rooted in traditional practices, with only limited scientific exploration into its potential benefits for oral health.
