Tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) has been investigated for its potential to support or treat gingivitis, primarily due to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Several in vitro studies have demonstrated that tea tree oil exhibits activity against oral pathogens commonly associated with gingivitis, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. Clinical evidence is moderate: a number of randomized controlled trials have evaluated the efficacy of tea tree oil-containing gels or mouth rinses in individuals with gingivitis. Some of these studies report a reduction in gingival inflammation, bleeding, and plaque scores compared to placebo, although the effects are generally modest and results can vary across studies. For example, a 2004 study published in the Australian Dental Journal found that a tea tree oil gel significantly reduced gingival bleeding and inflammation over a four-week period. However, there are limitations, including small sample sizes and variations in study design and formulation.

Safety is also a consideration, as tea tree oil can cause irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals when used orally. Overall, while there is scientific evidence to support the use of tea tree oil in managing gingivitis, the quality and consistency of evidence are moderate, and tea tree oil should not replace standard dental treatments. It may be considered as an adjunct in oral hygiene, but further large-scale and long-term studies are needed to fully establish its efficacy and safety profile.
