Evidence supporting the use of: Sumac
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sumac, particularly Rhus coriaria, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, including Middle Eastern and Mediterranean folk medicine, for various ailments, including oral health issues like gingivitis. Historically, sumac has been regarded for its astringent, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties, which are believed to help alleviate gum inflammation and control oral infections. Traditional applications have included using sumac extracts or powders as mouth rinses or topical applications for sore gums and other oral health problems.
From a scientific perspective, there is limited but emerging evidence evaluating sumac’s efficacy for gingivitis. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that sumac extracts exhibit antibacterial activity against oral pathogens and may reduce inflammation, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. A few small-scale studies have explored sumac’s effects on oral bacteria or gum health, supporting its potential, but these studies are preliminary and do not provide strong clinical evidence for widespread use. Therefore, while traditional use is well-documented and there is some promising laboratory data, the overall scientific validation remains limited. The evidence supporting sumac for gingivitis should thus be considered traditional, with moderate support from low-quality or early-stage research.
