Evidence supporting the use of: Sichuan Pagoda Tree
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sichuan Pagoda Tree (Styphnolobium japonicum, formerly Sophora japonica) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it is known as "Huai Hua." Traditionally, extracts from its flowers and buds have been used for their purported anti-inflammatory, hemostatic, and vascular-protective properties. In the context of gingivitis—a condition characterized by gum inflammation—TCM practitioners have historically recommended preparations containing Sichuan Pagoda Tree as part of mouth rinses or as ingredients in herbal toothpastes. The rationale is largely based on its supposed ability to "clear heat" and "cool the blood," which in TCM theory relates to reducing inflammation and bleeding. Scientifically, the main bioactive compounds in Sichuan Pagoda Tree, especially flavonoids like rutin and quercetin, have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in vitro and in animal studies. However, direct clinical evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for gingivitis in humans is sparse. Only a few small studies and anecdotal reports exist, and these are generally of limited methodological quality. There are no large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials validating its use for gingivitis as a standalone treatment. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition and supported by some preliminary pharmacological findings, robust scientific validation is lacking. The evidence rating is 2, reflecting traditional use and some limited preclinical data, but insufficient clinical proof.
