Evidence supporting the use of: Polyphenols
For the health condition: Gingivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Polyphenols are a diverse group of naturally occurring compounds found abundantly in fruits, vegetables, tea, coffee, and certain plant extracts. Increasingly, scientific research supports the use of polyphenols in managing gingivitis due to their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. Gingivitis is characterized by inflammation of the gums, primarily due to the accumulation of dental plaque and the activity of pathogenic oral bacteria.
Several in vitro and clinical studies have demonstrated that polyphenols, such as those found in green tea (catechins), cranberries (proanthocyanidins), and pomegranate (ellagitannins), can inhibit the growth and adhesion of key periodontal pathogens like Porphyromonas gingivalis and Streptococcus mutans. Additionally, polyphenols can reduce the production of inflammatory mediators such as cytokines and prostaglandins, thereby mitigating gingival inflammation.
Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown that mouthwashes or gels containing polyphenol-rich extracts can result in significant improvements in clinical parameters of gingivitis, such as reduced gingival bleeding and plaque scores, compared to placebo. However, while the evidence is promising and continues to grow, most studies are relatively small, and there is variability in the types and concentrations of polyphenols used. The mechanisms of action are also still being elucidated.
In summary, there is moderate scientific validation for the use of polyphenols in supporting the treatment of gingivitis, particularly as an adjunct to standard oral hygiene practices, but more large-scale, high-quality studies are needed to establish definitive benefits and optimal formulations.
