Phlorotannins are polyphenolic compounds derived from brown seaweeds, and in recent years, they have been investigated for their potential in oral health, particularly in the management of gingivitis. Emerging scientific evidence suggests that phlorotannins exhibit anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties, all of which are relevant to the pathogenesis of gingivitis—a condition characterized by inflammation and bacterial accumulation in the gums.

Several in vitro studies have demonstrated that phlorotannins can inhibit the growth of oral pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Streptococcus mutans, both implicated in periodontal disease. Additionally, phlorotannins have been shown to suppress the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α and IL-6 in gingival cells, which are elevated during gingivitis. Animal studies also indicate a reduction in inflammatory markers and improvement in periodontal tissue health upon administration of phlorotannin extracts.

However, clinical evidence in humans remains limited. Few small-scale pilot studies and preliminary clinical trials suggest potential benefits of phlorotannin-containing mouthwashes or gels in reducing gingival inflammation and plaque accumulation, but these studies are not yet robust enough to warrant strong clinical recommendations. Thus, while the scientific rationale and preclinical data are promising, the current level of evidence is rated as 2 out of 5, indicating early-stage validation that requires further clinical research.
